Full of amazing flavor this New York Style Hot Dog Chili is a favorite and super easy recipe that is the perfect accompaniment for grilling season or any time of the year.

I’m obsessed with Hot Dog Chili! When it comes to hot dogs I’m ok with the normal toppings but I tend to like to go over the top and that’s when this recipe comes out.

Super easy with minimal steps this comes together in no time. Simmered for an hour, it really gets all the flavors to marry in the chili and you will just fall in love.

Super meaty and also works great on more than just hot dogs! You can serve this on chili fries, hamburgers, and more. It literally is one of the best Hot Dog Chilis around.

We first started making this New York Style Hot Dog Chili many years ago, the recipe actually comes from my Dad and I have always loved it.

I have never changed a thing because his recipe was absolutely perfect to my taste, so it has been made this way for many years and will continue to be made this way for so much longer since it is always a hit!

This is a great recipe to throw together when you have cookouts and you can give your guests some options on how they want to top their hot dogs!

WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:

  • This does not lack on flavor at all!
  • It works great on other things than hot dogs.
  • This makes a large batch but you can double it to store for later.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED (FULL RECIPE BELOW):

Ground beef
Sweet onion
Chili powder
Ground mustard powder
Onion powder
Garlic powder
Ground allspice
Ground nutmeg
Garlic salt
Ground cumin
Celery salt
Ground cinnamon
Ketchup
Tomato sauce
Water
Soy sauce
Worcestershire sauce

HOW TO MAKE NEW YORK STYLE HOT DOG CHILI:

  1. Place a dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and onions, breaking up the beef into fine crumbles. Cook, stirring occasionally until the meat is no longer pink, about 10 minutes. Drain off any excess liquid.
  2. Add the chili powder, mustard powder, onion powder, garlic powder, allspice, nutmeg, garlic salt, cumin, celery salt, and cinnamon. Stir to combine, cook for about 2 minutes, until fragrant, stirring constantly.
  3. Add the ketchup, tomato sauce, water, soy sauce, and worcestershire sauce, stir to combine.
  4. Bring to a simmer, reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Take off the cover and continue to simmer for about 40 more minutes, until ¾ of the liquid cooks out, stirring occasionally.
  6. Serve over hot dogs.

CAN I SERVE THIS AS REGULAR CHILI?

Yes! This does make a large batch, but in my family, we also eat this on the side like a regular chili with cheese on top and our favorite chili toppings.

It’s just thicker and doesn’t contain beans, but it is absolutely amazing on its own and is great just served as regular chili as well.

WHAT ELSE CAN I SERVE THIS ON?

Besides served over hot dogs or on its own this Hot Dog Chili works great on other recipes which include:

  1. Hamburgers
  2. Chili Cheese Fries
  3. Frito Salad
  4. Nachos

CAN I HALVE OR DOUBLE THIS RECIPE?

Yes, you can do either. This makes enough to serve over 24 hot dogs so it really is perfect for parties. If you want to make it for a smaller crowd or a family you can cut it in half.

This stores great so you can absolutely double this recipe and save it for later to use whenever you want it.

HOW TO STORE:

This can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container where it will keep for up to 3 days.

This can also be frozen, to do that place it in a freezer container and it will keep for up to 3 months.

To defrost, remove to the refrigerator overnight until thawed. Warm it back up on the stovetop, you may need to add a little water to it to loosen it up, and then let it cook out again before eating any leftovers.

TIPS AND TRICKS:

  • There are a ton of spices in this, which makes it unique and more of a “New York Style” hot dog chili. Even though there are small amounts of ingredients it is essential to add them all to get the right flavor.
  • This can be frozen, see above on how to do that.
  • You can easily double or halve this recipe.
  • This can be served over various other dishes or alone, see above for some ideas.
  • This would be perfect for a party, you can keep it warm in a slow cooker and guests can serve themselves.
  • Use a lean ground beef to reduce the grease amount, we like to use at least 85/15.

  • 3 pounds ground beef
  • 1 large sweet onion finely chopped
