Valentine’s Day Sugar Cookies- so easy and so delicious you will never make sugar cookies any other way!

Growing up I was NEVER a fan of sugar cookies, but now I have a recipe that makes the best sugar cookies ever.

Originally, I shared this recipe when making my Disney inspired Sugar Cookies with a chocolate ganache, but I thought I'd share how to turn them into a tasty Valentine’s Day treat!

Not only is the cookie top notch in flavor, but topped with my buttercream makes these so good amazing!

Alright let’s make the best sugar cookies!

How to make the best Valentine’s Heart Sugar Cookies

  • Process sugar in a food processor to make ultra-fine (but not powdered sugar cookies)
  • Add in cold butter, process, egg and vanilla, process, flour, baking soda, and baking powder and process.
  • Divide dough in half then roll out and refrigerate for at least 1.5 hours.
  • Cut out your cute heart shapes then bake until the edges are just golden brown
  • Let cool and whip up some vanilla buttercream dyed different colors
  • Decorate with frosting, candies, sprinkles and you can even write sweet messages on the cookies!

The BEST Valentine’s Heart Sugar Cookies (3)

Make sure to keep your dough cold!

Do I have to use a food processor?

I use a food processor for two reasons:

  1. I am able to get the sugar ultra-fine which adds to the delicious texture of the cookie
  2. Using the food processor cuts in the cold butter without having to melt it which helps the texture of the cookie as well

If you don't have a food processor that fine. They will still be amazing.

This is the food processor that I use and love!

Where to get Valentine cookie cutters?

I found mine at Walmart- but this set is very similar to what I used.

I’m not able to pick up and move my cut-out hearts to the baking sheet?!

Depending on how cold the dough is, it might be hard to lift it off the parchment paper. If that’s the case just use scissors to cut parchment paper around the cookie and place cookie and parchment directly on baking sheet.

What kind of baking sheet should I use?

If you have a baking sheet without edges use it (like this one)! It will allow the air to circulate better and bake your cookies more evenly. You can also turn a rimmed baking sheet upside down and bake on the bottom side!

The BEST Valentine’s Heart Sugar Cookies (4)

I love all the different ways you can decorate these!

How to dye and flavor frosting?

I recommend using gel food coloring to dye your frosting and using either extracts or emulsions to flavor the frosting. All of these items can be found in the cake decorating isle of craft and grocery stores. For these cookies I used almond extract in the frosting for a tasty treat!

You can dye your frosting any color! Leave some white to write cute messages!

How to decorate sugar cookies and what tips did I use for decorating these cookies?

I primarily used a writing tip for dots and writing, a leaf tip for making ribbon details, and a star tip for making some of the other designs. Getting a Wilton decorating tip kit like this is great to have on hand for decorating! I also recommend using piping bags and piping couplers. The couplers allow you to switch out the decorating tips really easily!

Other than that I used sprinkles and m&m candies to decorate! Have fun decorating!

What if you don’t want to frost the cookies or make a batch of buttercream?

You can enjoy these sugar cookies plain (they are that good!) or simply gently press sprinkles onto the cookies before you bake them. Then you will have pretty and delicious sugar cookies without having to frost them. See picture below for how they turn out!

If you don't want to frost, just bake these cookies with sprinkles pressed on them!

Tips and Tricks

  • I used almond extract instead of vanilla in this batch of frosting, but you can use whatever extract you want.
