On the sidewalk near the Roseway neighborhood Popeye’s Restaurant, at the intersection of NE 82nd Avenue of Roses and Fremont Street a man lay bleeding after being shot on Friday evening, May 19. Witnesses told reporters it was obvious that the young man had sustained a severe head wound.

Portland Police Bureau (PPB) North Precinct officers, dispatched to the scene at 11:18 p.m., found “an injured victim in the street”, as a PPB official put it. “The suspect or suspects left and no immediate arrests were made.”

Officials weren’t clear if the victim had died at the scene, in an ambulance, or later at a local hospital. However the PPB’s Homicide Unit responded to investigate what turned out to be another gunshot murder.

An officer blocks SE Boise Street, just west of 82nd Avenue of Roses, while others look into a domestic disturbance.

Neighbors who live along S. E. 80th Avenue wondered why their street was closed down from early in the morning of Tuesday, May 23, until late in the afternoon.

Officers taped off 80th Avenue, prohibiting vehicles and pedestrians from use of the street from Cora to Gladstone for about 15 hours, starting about 12:45 a.m.

SE Boise Street was also closed off a half-block west of 82nd Avenue of Roses.

According to official records there were two “Disturbance, Priority” calls on the 8000 Block of SE Boise Street: One on May 22 at 11:28 p.m.; and another an hour later at 12:47 a.m. on May 23..

“There were several calls to this location during the night and early morning concerning disturbances; it’s not clear exactly what happened,” PPB Public Information Officer Lt. Nathan Sheppard told East Portland News later in the day.

A Fire/Medical call was dispatched to the same location at 3:24 a.m. on May 23.

Sheppard followed up. “A woman was transported to a local hospital, and detectives are currently investigating, he said, without commenting on the extent of the injuries she had sustained.

Detectives remained at the scene throughout the following day, well into the late afternoon hours.

A shooting in the morning of Wednesday, May 24, reportedly left a man dead in his car along NE Glisan Street near 55th Avenue.

At 9:18 a.m., PPB East Precinct officers were dispatched there, and found a deceased adult man.

Other than saying that the PPB Homicide Unit had been sent to the scene and assumed control of the investigation, officials added nothing else to their press release.

Gun located nearby
However, a pedestrian in the area told reporters that a window of a car had been shot out. And, another person told of seeing officers find a gun one block south, near NE Flanders Street, in the bushes at the Grace Covenant Fellowship Church – but it’s unclear if this weapon was related to the shooting.

Although hoping is not a strategy, we do hope that the good work done by the Portland Police Bureau’s specialty “illegally-held-gun-confiscation teams” will pay off, and that they are not hindered in this by Portland’s Commissioner of Police.
